Celebratory Day of Dance for Older PeopleĀ

The Dance Studio Leeds and Leeds Creative Contemporary Dance, alongside our partners at the Alzheimer’s Society, are very excited to be holding an afternoon of dance workshops as part of the International Day of Older People (IDOP) on Tuesday 6th October.
These workshops will include a mix of dance and movement styles and music genres (from current popular tracks to nostalgic classics). The participants will have a chance to explore movement through their own creativity, and work on fun dance sequences whilst improving their overall fitness and well-being. Carers/and or family members are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. The sessions are free of charge and suitable for complete beginners as well as those who have previously participated in dance.

Workshop 1: Dance for People Living with Dementia
Led by, Leeds Creative Contemporary Dance’s Kim Glassby, this free 75-minute participatory dance/movement workshop is for people living with dementia (including carers) to explore sensations and memories through movement. Accessible sensory objects and different genres of music will be offered to allow participants time to respond personally and physically in their own ways, and then to be facilitated in bringing their responses into dance. Participants will be supported to feel the joy of movement individually and with others, and carers will be supported in taking the lead from those who they are supporting and will also learn some games and ideas to take away to use at home.

Workshop 2: Creative Contemporary Session
Led by, Leeds Creative Contemporary Dance’s, Rosemary Spencer. This free, 90-minute participatory dance/movement workshop aims to share the Creative Contemporary inclusive dance approach with the public and to celebrate body wisdom and older people dancing in Leeds. The event will bring together core LCCD members and the public who are interested to try new things in terms of dance, creativity and physical activity in a warm and welcoming studio environment. The workshop is open to older people of 60+ and also adult dancers of all ages who wish to experience and celebrate dancing together with older people.
