Tutor Bio

Emma is a professional dancer, both in live dance and video performance, a dance and yoga teacher, and an experienced choreographer, graduating with BA(Hons) from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 1998. In addition to performing professionally, she has been drawn to work with a variety of community groups involving heritage, local culture and disability. Emma works with them to create unique works for each, blending dance, music and creative workshops to help them tell their own stories. Emma’s work with communities is focused around her role as Artistic Director of Blood Memory Dance, where she has created multi-dimensional performance works for diverse inter-generational groups like Hawksworth memorial community, the Swathmore centre, the York Land Army festival, the Bradford Bubble Up festival. Emma has worked with DSL for over 2 years, taught specified 2 hr Graham to Madonna workshops and delivered regular evening technique classes to DSL community. Since the pandemic she have become skilled working with on-line provision, devising Youtube videos, teaching weekly dance & yoga sessions and delivering bespoke one to one classes and larger group sessions. Alongside her teaching Emma became online guest artist for Hull Dance speaking live about professional community dance projects and the changes and adaptions currently made to her artist work during the pandemic. Also being selected for self care as an artist programme run by Creative Well with integrative arts psychotherapist Roshmi Lovatt. Emma learnt fresh and innovative approaches to sustaining her role as an dance artist and facilitator. Her role as a professional performer was revisited in 2020 embarking on Ascendance R&D professional dance work out in location of Yorkshire, working with 360 film artist and other professional dancers. Emma project managed an online project mentoring young artists from Hull and Yorkshire devising and collaborating with professional Musician through virtual workshops to engage families with Time of Our Lives project funded by Arts Council. Recently Emma was selected by Northern Ballet to create an online film of her inclusive group 'Lifelines' for Expressions Dance festival 2021.
