Waacking x Voguing Workshops (DSL)
Waacking Workshop with Jazz: Sunday 10th May, 1.30-3pm
Whacking/Waacking is a style that was introduced in the underground clubs in Los Angeles by gay black & Hispanic men during the 70’s disco era. Its distinctive highlights include arms technique, posing, attitude and self-expression. The workshop is an introduction to the style’s fundamentals, as well as understanding its history and elements. It also gives you the freedom to fully express yourself on the dance floor through freestyle and/or choreography! Bring your best glitter/sparkles outfits and let’s have a disco party!
Meet Jazz
Jazz (she/her) is a Leeds based dancer and performer. She has trained in numerous styles, but her main passion and focus is Whacking/Waacking, which she has trained by some of the best in the scene nationally and globally. She is currently representing, sharing her love for the style through battles/competitions, performances, judging and teaching across the country. Jazz has also worked with well-known brands and organisations such as Redbull and Break Mission/B-Side.
Voguing Workshop with Shakeel: Sunday 10th May, 3.15-4.45pm
Step into the world of Voguing with this empowering, adult-focused workshop led by Shakeel Kimotho, a space to explore confidence, expression, and performance in a supportive, no-pressure environment. Rooted in the iconic ballroom culture of 1980s New York, voguing is a bold and expressive dance style built on striking poses, fluid transitions, and storytelling through movement. In this workshop, Shakeel will guide you through the foundations of vogue including: hands, catwalk, dips, and performance quality, while encouraging you to connect with your own unique style. This workshop focuses on stepping out of your comfort zone, building confidence, and embracing your individuality in a welcoming, inclusive space. All are welcome, whether you’re completely new to this dance style or looking to build upon your current experience.
Meet Shakeel
Shakeel Kimotho is a trained dance artist, performer and teacher, with training from the Urdang Academy, the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and holds a Master’s degree in Theatre and Performance. She has worked as a principal, swing, ensemble member, fight captain and dance captain, performing across the world in theatres, opera houses, outdoor venues, arenas and on screen. Credits include Animal Farm, Tip Toe (Channel 4), Cats (International Tour) and La Cage Aux Folles. She teaches across studio, school, youth arts and higher education settings, as well as Reformer Pilates. Her classes are rooted in access, inclusivity and intention. Her teaching style is clear, encouraging and body-aware. Shakeel is passionate about helping people grow, trust themselves and feel both supported and challenged in the room – with a little wit thrown in when it is most needed.
